YMCA Fitness Personal Training Course

This course is designed to certify you to deliver personal training to both individuals and small groups.  You will be certified by our YMCA Fitness Trainer in a course that includes virtual and/or in-person sessions as well as self-directed online modules through YMCA Canada’s Learning Management System. The course is completed with a practical at the end as well as 50 hours of class participation.

Prerequisites: Minimum of 16 years of age. Standard First Aid.

YMCA Group Fitness Instructor Course

We provide you with the knowledge, skills and competencies to work or volunteer as a group fitness instructor with the YMCA. You will be certified by our YMCA Fitness Trainer in a course that includes virtual and/or in-person sessions as well as self-directed online modules through YMCA Canada’s Learning Management System. The course is completed with a practical at the end as well as 50 hours of class participation.

Prerequisites: Minimum of 16 years of age. Standard First Aid.

YMCA Aquatic Fitness Instructor Course

We provide you with the knowledge, skills and competencies to work or volunteer as an aquatic fitness instructor with the YMCA. Bronze Star

This course develops swimming proficiency, lifesaving skill and personal fitness. You will refine your stroke mechanics, acquire self-rescue skills, and apply fitness principles in training workouts. Bronze Star is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion and provides a fun introduction to lifesaving sport.

Prerequisites: Minimum of 12 years of age.

Bronze Medallion

Judgement, knowledge, skills and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. You will acquire the assessment and problem-saving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. This course is a prerequisite for assistance lifeguard training in Bronze Cross.

Prerequisites: Minimum of 13 years of age or completion of Bronze Star.

Bronze Cross

This course begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding, and prepares you for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced training such as National Lifeguard.

YMCA Swim Instructor Course

This course is designed to prepare you to teach and evaluate the YMCA Swimming Lesson Program. You will learn teaching methods, planning and evaluation skills as well as stroke development and correction techniques.

Prerequisites: Minimum of 15 years of age. Completion of Bronze Cross.

National Lifeguard

This course is designed to develop the fundamental values, judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness required by lifeguards. The National Lifeguard course emphasizes the lifeguarding skills, principles and practices, and decision-making processes that will assist you to provide effective safety supervision in swimming pool environments.

Prerequisites: Minimum of 15 years of age. Completion of Bronze Cross.

We require a minimum number of participants in order to put off a course. Once enough interest has been expressed, we will provide a schedule depending on the instructor availability, as well as the time requirements for that particular course. Those who have expressed interest will be notified.

Each course is priced individually, and we also offer discounts for members and re-certifications. Costs will be disclosed when registration for a particular course opens.
